Synopsis:

This book deals with the development of the Irish fishing industry from the foundation of the Irish State in 1922 until the signing of the Treaty of Accession to the EEC in January 1972. The involvement of government in the efforts to develop the industry are explained as well as the lack of organisation in the fishing ports before the economic planning of the late 1950s and early 60s. The activity of foreign trawlers on the Irish coast is examined. Two chapters are devoted to fishery protection. Finally the events surrounding the negotiations and signing of the fishery agreement in 1971 are outlined.
