This publication collates, for the first time, the names and stories of those listed on the Republican Roll of Honour for County Galway. By incorporating what we know today about the biographical details as well as the Republican political and military activity of those who died due to their role in the struggle for Irish Freedom, it is hoped that this initiative will help preserve the memory of these people for future
generations.
While the lives of Republicans such as Liam Mellows and Éamonn Ceannt have been well-researched and studied and others like Cllr Mícheál Breathnach, Fr Michael Griffin and Tony D’Arcy are known to those with a regional or historical interest, there are also many names on the Galway Roll of Honour that most people have never heard of.
More than a simple listing, the book is biographical as well and tells the circumstances of those killed. There is the awful cruelty surrounding the murders of Volunteers Pat and Harry Loughnane from Shanaglish, South Galway, the disturbing story of Eileen Quinn, a pregnant woman, indiscriminately murdered by Crown Forces, and the story of Tony D’Arcy’s death on Hunger Strike in Arbour Hill Prison in 1940. D’Arcy was the last Galway Republican to die on active service.
